Embroidered Dress and Sweater
What a rare and unusual find, an appliquéd
sweater is such a wonderful vintage piece,
but this is the first time that I have ever
owned one with a matching dress.
Cut from an antique Chinese shawl the
appliqués on this outfit are just
spectacular quality. All hand embroidered
in the most beautiful color palette, they
are just stunning when applied to the simple
black cashmere cardigan and black crepe
dress.
Wear them together for the most dramatic
visual impact, or separate them and wear the
sweater with other pieces in your wardrobe.
These are two very unusual and well crafted
pieces of vintage clothing. The cashmere
sweater is quite plain, no buttons, lined in
black silk, and the cuffs and the hem have
been turned under for a snug fit in the
style of Helen Bond Carruthers. The appliqué
is only on the left front of the sweater,
continuing over the shoulder with a large
white rose at the center back.
The sleeveless black crepe dress has a scoop
neckline, fitted waist and a metal zipper at
the center back. The appliqué covers the
entire left side of the dress with lush
flowers and birds matching the sweater
perfectly. The dress itself is of average
quality but I doubt if anyone will ever
notice.
There is one loose piece of embroidery on
the back of the sweater, aside from that
these two pieces are in excellent
condition. They are part of a collection
from a Southern lady who appliquéd the
sweaters for herself, her family and her
friends.
