Helen Bond Carruthers Derby Sweater

This sweater is a rare example of the work of Helen Bond Carruthers from Versailles, KY. In a tribute to her home state the motif for this cashmere sweater is taken from a Kentucky Derby Commemorative scarf.

The design is cut, backed and appliquéd all by hand in the workrooms of Helen Bond Carruthers. The waistband and cuffs are turned up in her traditional style, creating a snug fit and more flattering silhouette. There are eight antique buttons at the front of the sweater, it is fully lined in silk chiffon and bears her oversized label at the waistband. This charming and unusual sweater is in excellent condition.
