Helen Bond Carruthers Sweater

A black cashmere sweater is embellished with hand sewn motifs cut from an antique Chinese silk shawl in the workrooms of Helen Bond Carruthers in Versailles, KY.

In the 1950's these elegant sweaters were sold in resort towns from Newport to Palm Beach and were worn and collected by socialites, celebrities and Hollywood movie stars alike.

This example has flowers, birds, and a rooster appliquéd on the front, back and sleeves. The waistband and cuffs have been shortened for a snug fit, there are eight pearl buttons for closure and the sweater is lined in black silk. This elegant cashmere sweater is in very good condition.
