Claire McCardell Day Dress
Claire McCardell was at the
forefront of design in the 1940's.
This is the decade when the fashion
industry in the United States really
came into its own, no longer
influenced by Paris, and the
American look was born.
Casual, easy, day to night dressing
became a popular necessity with the
wartime fabric restrictions. This
black cotton dress from Claire
McCardell is a great example. It can
be dressed up or down and worn
comfortably almost anywhere. The
sleeves are cut in one piece with
the bodice. Her signature brass
hooks are used at the center front,
the only decorative touch that is
needed. The skirt is gently gathered
in front. The waistline dips to a
low point above the gathers in back.
This stylish black cotton dress is
in excellent condition.
