Irene Lace Cocktail Dress

A feminine and alluring black lace cocktail dress designed by Irene Lentz, a Hollywood Costume Designer known best as Irene.  She left MGM studios in 1949 to start her own clothing company.

It was successful until her return to MGM in the early 1960's. Irene was nominated for 15 Academy Awards and won 5 times. She designed this dress in the 1950's and it embodies the spirit of femininity and glamour found in the American woman of the time.

The upper bodice, sleeves and center back of the dress are made from a sheer black silk chiffon. The balance of the dress is beautiful French lace. The bodice is fitted, the skirt is narrow over the hips widening towards the hem, and the hemline is slightly longer in the back.

There are three fabric covered buttons and loops at the neckline, and then thirty buttons and loops starting just above the waistline. The back of the dress is further embellished with four black velvet bows at the center back of the skirt.

The dress still retains the original underdress made from silk crepe. This crepe is covered with a double layer of silk chiffon, one matching the crepe and one matching the lace. There is a metal zipper at the center back and the label is in a seam. The underdress is in excellent condition.

The lace is perfect and all of the buttons and loops are in place on the dress.  There is a bruise to the chiffon on the right side and I have included a photo of this minor flaw.
