1920's Egyptian Assute Coat

With the discovery of the tomb of King Tut in 1922 all things Egyptian became a worldwide sensation.  This stunning vintage coat from the 1920's was designed from an Egyptian shawl called assute.

These shawls are distinguished by the use of small strips of nickel silver, which is hand applied in an intricate and decorative pattern on a base of cotton net.  Each tribe creates a different design or signature pattern for their shawls.

Shawls were exported to Europe and the United States in the 1920's and they were used to create jackets, coats and evening gowns.  These garments are rare in the current vintage clothing market.

The designer of this coat used the Art Deco pattern of the shawls to great advantage.  Tribesmen and camels decorate the sleeves, and march across the waistline of the coat.  Intricate geometric patterns are used to great artistic advantage on the front and back of this stunning garment.

The coat closes with a large button and loop.  The black cotton net is placed over a black inner lining, and the entire garment is lined in cream silk.  This coat is a true collector's item and it is in excellent condition.  The best part may be that it is truly a wearable size.  This is a garment that can be worn and enjoyed.  It will make any event a special occasion.
