Stenciled Velvet
Yardage
What an
amazing piece of 1920's fabric. It is unmarked, but
probably Italian, most likely Venetian, because of the
similarity to the stenciled velvets created by Mariano
Fortuny.
The
entire piece of velvet is hand painted. The background
is a thick, crunchy silver with an undulating pattern of
people and banners painted in gold. The top layer of
paint is a rich dark coral used for the castle and
architectural elements. Both the silver and gold
metallic paints glisten in the light and create a strong
visual impact.
This
fabric could be used for a garment, a wall hanging,
pillows or upholstery. There are more than three yards
of fabric on the bolt. The mid section is missing the
selvage on one side in a ten inch section. [This is
visible in one of the photos.] Other than that this
striking and unusual fabric is in excellent condition.
