Chinese Embroidered
Silk Coat
An elegant and
unusual Chinese coat, this was made for the Western market
in the early part of the 20th century. It would be a
versatile wardrobe piece, elegant worn over an evening dress
or a casual pair pants and a top.
This
striking coat is all hand stitched; cream patterned silk is
embellished at the collar, cuffs and side seams with
exquisite hand embroidered panels depicting Chinese life.
Men and women are engaged in various activities, all
embroidered on a sheer panel of silk applied to the coat.
These panels are outlined with a band of cream colored
satin.
There is an
open neckline above three fabric frog closures. The long
sleeves do not have a seam at the shoulder, it is midway
between the shoulder and the elbow. [I have measured from
the collar to the edge of the sleeve].
There are
openings on each side of the coat for ease of movement. The
entire garment is lined in a matching China silk and it is
in excellent condition.
